A bit about us

We are the only opera company exclusively staging original commissions written for and performed exclusively by children.

Known previously as W11 Opera for Young People, LYO has been bringing the wonderful world of opera with its transformative power to children for over 50 years. From its humble origins in a small corner of West London in 1971, our influence has spread across the capital, so it seems only fitting that our name should reflect the broader reach of our cast. Please join us as we embark on this continuing adventure!

London Youth Opera is an opera company for young performers aged 9-18. We welcome children of all musical abilities and backgrounds, who are passionate and willing to explore where music and theatre can take them.

Greetings from our London Youth Opera cast!

What do we do?

We rehearse a new or previously commissioned opera in the autumn each year for a production in December.

Who can join?

Anyone can join! We welcome children who love to sing, act and dance — no previous experience or musical education is necessary. We value enthusiasm, commitment, and a positive attitude above all else.

Our rehearsal schedule is rigorous, but through it children will gain an experience and friends that will stay with them for the rest of their lives.

Do I need to be able to sing?

No previous experience or formal training is necessary. We welcome all children who love to sing and although we hold auditions at the start of our season, these are only to find a role best suited for each participant and everyone is given a part in the production.

Are there bursaries?

Yes there are!

A minimum of a third of our cast have full bursaries, we never turn anyone away because they can’t pay our annual subscription fee.

Do you want to take part in our next production?
